ALT-NA-CRAIG HOUSE NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2017

February 3, 2017
There was a very special birthday celebrated by Margaret Doherty on 16th January 2017, when she reached the wonderful age of 104. Margaret is Inverclyde’s oldest resident and she celebrated this extremely special day surrounded by five generations of her family. The occasion was celebrated at a party with 20 members of her family, including two grandchildren who came from the USA, and her great grandchildren. The Clydeside Singers entertained everyone and the Greenock Telegraph ran a feature story of the occasion.

December was a one of the busiest months we have had. The home was beautifully decorated and the children who visited from the local children’s nurseries and schools were mesmerised by the Santas, polar bears, and white owls. The residents loved speaking to the children and thoroughly enjoyed their beautiful carol singing.

Ayr Races A day at the races is one of the regular treats for the residents at Altnacraig. This time the residents had a beautiful lunch and hospitality in the Red Rum box at Ayr Racecourse. They enjoyed the racing and a little flutter, with some, but not many, beating the bookies. The weather was beautiful which meant the residents were able to go out of the box on to the balcony to watch the horses racing, and enjoy the atmosphere. As is the tradition on their way home they just had to stop and enjoy a fish supper. It simply wouldn’t be race day without the fish supper!

Nancy was 103 this month. What an achievement to be this wonderful age! She is a remarkable lady. Nancy was awarded an M.B.E. for twenty years’ service working with the Gibbshill Community. She worked hard to bring together the young people of the area and keep them occupied. She also went to prisons to visit young offenders, and when they were released she would help find them somewhere to live and help them get a job. What a great lady!

Over the last few months the residents have taken part in a number of fundraising events, and the result of their efforts was that they handed over a cheque for £630.00 to Cheryl Mattow, who is the leader of Kings Kids, which is a charity which raises funds for orphans who live in Indonesia. She thanked all the residents for their invaluable help in raising this amount of money. It will go towards the costs of much needed supplies for their education.

We had another wonderful day at Ayr Race course. The hospitality was second to none with bucks fizz on arrival, followed by an elaborate four course meal with wine and spirits flowing freely for the entire day, ending later with a traditional high tea. We were all incredibly lucky and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. This is definitely one of our favourite outings and we look forward to returning to Ayr Races in the autumn.
